Shopify vs. Salesforce Commerce Cloud: which has better omnichannel capability?

Salesforce includes full Order Management only in its Premium B2C Commerce edition, and Adobe's cloud service accepts only out-of-process apps, which limits its POS extension choices.

Shopify fits a brand that wants web and store sales run from one admin at published prices. You can set up in-store pickup for web orders and mark those orders ready and picked up in the Shopify admin (pickup setup). Handling pickup, ship-from-store and ship-to-customer orders inside the POS app needs POS Pro at that location, at $89 a month per location billed yearly or included for the first 20 locations on Plus.

Salesforce fits a retailer that wants associates working from Salesforce customer, order and loyalty records in its POS app and can scope quoted licenses and connector setup. Its B2C Commerce OCAPI route supports endless aisle and in-store returns of web orders, but not pickup or ship-from-store.

Adobe Commerce documents in-store pickup, store-based stock routing and reward points in its own software. Its store checkout runs through a Marketplace POS extension or a custom integration.

For growing brands, Square and Lightspeed sell their own POS and online store. We reviewed each vendor's pricing pages, help centers and product documentation on October 1, 2026.

Which store workflows are native on each platform?

Native in this table means the vendor documents the workflow in its own product, and each cell names the interface, plan or connection it depends on.

Workflow Shopify Salesforce Adobe Commerce
Shared stock across stores and web Native on paid plans; POS syncs orders and stock with the admin (POS plans) Supported on the B2C Commerce OCAPI route (OCAPI route) Native; stores can be stock sources (inventory)
In-store pickup of web orders Set up and fulfilled in the admin (setup); handling in the POS app needs POS Pro (POS pickup) Order Management connector can stream pickup orders to the POS (connector); not on the OCAPI route Native delivery method; needs a non-default stock and distance rules (pickup)
Ship from store Fulfilling in the POS app needs POS Pro and order routing rules (ship from store) Same connector can stream store-fulfilled orders, which associates pack and ship (fulfillment); not on the OCAPI route Native source recommendations, including nearest-source rules (inventory)
Endless aisle Ship-to-customer orders from the POS app need POS Pro and an online device (shipping) Supported on the OCAPI route Not documented by Adobe; varies by chosen POS extension, not verified here
Returns across channels and stores Returns at any location with POS Pro, original purchase location without it; web-order handling not stated (pricing) Web orders returned in store supported on the OCAPI route Native return authorizations (returns); in-store intake not documented in the pages we read
Clienteling POS Pro profiles that track preferences (pricing) Native, with purchase history and wishlists (POS) Not documented by Adobe; varies by chosen POS extension, not verified here
Loyalty Third-party app (Shopify blog) Connector to Loyalty Management, a product with its own pricing (pricing) Native reward points (rewards)
Offline sales Cash anytime; cards after you activate them on listed readers, within limits you set (offline) Salesforce says payments and orders continue offline (POS) Varies by chosen POS extension; not verified here
Hardware and regions Integrated card hardware in 15 listed countries (POS plans) iOS or Android; Adyen, Verifone and Elavon integrations; the product page lists no countries (POS) Varies by chosen POS extension; not verified here

Shopify also promotes an EY report it commissioned, published in November 2024, that reports 22% better total cost of ownership and 20% faster implementation for Shopify POS businesses. The landing page says both are averages against the surveyed market set based on merchants' self-reported figures, so treat them as vendor-sponsored survey results, not an estimate for your stores.

Does one vendor owning the POS mean one shared database?

Salesforce's help center shows its POS and B2C Commerce exchanging data through OCAPI interfaces and a cartridge, with B2C Commerce building the cart, tax and promotions (OCAPI route).

The Order Management link is a separate POS connector that needs Salesforce REST API version 49.0 or later, field and status mappings, and an import job your customer success manager sets up (connector). The same page lets the POS work with NetSuite or a custom order system, so confirm which order system will feed pickup and store fulfillment before pricing the rollout.

Full Order Management appears in the Premium column of the three B2C Commerce editions; Growth and Plus mark it not applicable, and every edition is quoted. A quote can therefore bundle commerce and order management in one edition, so ask it to list POS, B2C Commerce and Order Management scope line by line.

Adobe's documentation and pricing page that we reviewed describe no Adobe-made POS, and its Marketplace has a category of POS extensions from other vendors. Adobe discontinued a separate Store Fulfillment extension in February 2024; the inventory, pickup and returns features in the table are current Adobe Commerce documentation.

Adobe's feature comparison lists in-process PHP and out-of-process extensions for its PaaS editions. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service is limited to out-of-process extensibility through APIs, events and App Builder, and its Marketplace row there lists App Builder apps. Check that a POS extension supports your edition and version.

Does wholesale change the choice?

Shopify's Basic, Grow and Advanced plans allow up to 3 active B2B catalogs across all B2B markets, and those catalog features need the new Shopify Markets. Plus allows unlimited catalogs and catalogs assigned to a specific company or company location (B2B plans).

Salesforce sells B2B Commerce as quoted Growth and Advanced editions, with 6 storefronts and Order Management Lite or 10 storefronts and full Order Management.

Adobe's feature comparison says core B2B features come pre-installed on its SaaS edition and are installed on PaaS.

We didn't compare wholesale for Square, Lightspeed or BigCommerce.

What do these platforms cost at one, three and ten stores?

The table shows selected list fees for platform and store software in US dollars a month. It excludes payment processing, hardware, apps, POS partner fees and implementation. Read it alongside the workflow table above.

Selected plan and billing 1 store 3 stores 10 stores
Shopify Grow plus POS Pro, billed yearly $168 $346 $969

Shopify lists Grow at $79 a month billed yearly or $105 billed monthly. Basic, Grow and Advanced allow 10 inventory locations and Plus allows 200. The ten-store Grow figure therefore uses every location, and a warehouse counted as its own active location would push the brand to Plus. Plus lists $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 on one year when the setup is standard, and Shopify moves more complex, higher-volume businesses to a revenue-based variable fee. Because Plus includes 20 POS Pro locations, that starting rate doesn't rise between one and ten stores.

Square charges Plus and Premium per location each month. Its inventory page gives Square Free basic stock tracking and low-stock alerts, while the retail pricing table puts the features it labels inventory tracking, plus its loyalty program, on Plus and Premium. Cross-location returns and transfer orders need Premium, so a three-store retailer that takes returns at any store is pricing Premium.

Lightspeed's US calculator lists Core at $149 a month billed yearly with Lightspeed Payments, or $179 billed monthly, for Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). It shows no price for merchants using another card processor and asks retailers with several locations to contact sales.

BigCommerce sets plans by GMV, which it counts as gross order value less 10%. Core covers trailing 12-month GMV up to $30,000 and Growth up to $100,000. Scale covers $33,333 of GMV a month, charges 0.9% above that, and moves to Performance once trailing 12-month GMV hits $2 million. Core, Growth and Scale allow 4, 5 and 8 inventory locations, so ten stores tracked as separate locations need Performance. A payment provider outside BigCommerce's embedded list adds a platform fee of 2.0%, 1.0% or 0.6% of eligible GMV on Core, Growth and Scale, on top of processor charges.

The Salesforce pricing pages we reviewed list Loyalty Management Starter at $20,000 per org a month billed annually. B2C Commerce and Order Management editions are quoted, and the POS product page shows no price. Adobe's pricing page lists its SaaS, PaaS and Optimizer packages with a pricing request for each.

How do Square, Lightspeed and BigCommerce compare for a growing brand?

We use growing brand to mean one adding its second sales channel or its next few stores, whatever its revenue.

Criterion Square Lightspeed BigCommerce
Inventory sync Web items managed in the same item library as the POS (item library) eCom syncs products with Lightspeed Retail and tracks stock across locations (eCom) Through the partner POS integration; BigCommerce describes syncing stock across channels (omnichannel)
POS hardware Square's Register, Terminal, Stand and card readers (offline help) Countertop stations, scanners and iPads; iOS mobile payments in six listed countries (pricing) Set by the partner, such as Square, Vend, Clover or Heartland Retail (pricing)
Customer record Profile created from every sale; online accounts show order history and loyalty (pricing) Online account shows loyalty points earned on any channel; shared purchase history not stated (eCom) Set by the POS connector; not documented on the pages we read
Offline card payments Upload within 24 to 72 hours depending on hardware; you carry declined payments (offline help) Not covered on the pages we read Set by the POS partner

The pages we reviewed give no measured sync timing or rollout length, so ask each finalist for both in writing. Then have them demonstrate these orders on the hardware and processor you'd use:

  • A web order picked up in store
  • A web order returned at a different store
  • A ship-to-customer sale from the floor
  • An offline card sale reconciled after the connection returns
