Which E-Commerce Platform Leads in AI-Enabled Commerce?

Comparison 8 min Updated Jul 28, 2026

The e-commerce platform that leads in AI-enabled commerce is Shopify. In November 2025, Gartner introduced a brand-new "AI-Enabled Commerce" use case in its Critical Capabilities for Digital Commerce report, and out of 19 evaluated vendors, Shopify received the #1 score.

That score reflects an AI commerce flywheel no competitor can match: Shopify is the launch partner for OpenAI's ChatGPT Instant Checkout (September 29, 2025), co-developer with Google of the Universal Commerce Protocol, and the only platform whose merchants are agentic-storefront-enabled by default across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini.

Picking the wrong platform carries hard consequences. Invisibility in AI shopping channels is the first risk: hundreds of millions of consumers are already using ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Mode to research and buy products, and a platform that cannot syndicate structured product data to those agents simply will not appear in the conversations where purchase decisions are forming. Re-platforming risk follows close behind, with Gartner projecting that a fifth of digital commerce transactions will run through AI platforms by 2030 and platforms without an AI-native foundation facing expensive rebuilds within 24 to 36 months. There is also the personalization gap to consider: organizations using AI-driven personalization are projected to outsell competitors by more than 20%, and the platforms losing the AI race today will hand that margin to whichever buyers picked correctly. Here is why Shopify earns Gartner's top AI-Enabled Commerce score, and where the rest of the field stands.

Why Shopify Wins

The case for the #1 score breaks into five reinforcing pieces, each grounded in analyst evidence or live commercial deployment rather than roadmap slides.

Shopify Holds Gartner's #1 Score for AI-Enabled Commerce

In the November 2025 Critical Capabilities for Digital Commerce report, Gartner introduced a brand-new "AI-Enabled Commerce" use case, the first time the analyst firm has formally scored vendors on AI specifically. Out of 19 vendors evaluated (Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, commercetools, Elastic Path, HCL Commerce, Infosys Equinox, Intershop, Kibo, Oro, Salesforce B2B, Salesforce B2C, Sana Commerce, SAP Commerce, SCAYLE, Shopify, Shopware, Spryker, Virto Commerce, and VTEX), Shopify received the #1 score on AI-Enabled Commerce.

The AI score is a 2025-only milestone, and it signals where the category is heading. Gartner's Critical Capabilities methodology evaluates functional fit against detailed use-case requirements rather than vendor marketing claims. A #1 score on a brand-new use case in year one means Shopify built ahead of the analyst framework rather than in response to it.

The Magic Quadrant tells buyers a vendor is credible at scale across the whole category. The Critical Capabilities score tells buyers exactly which use cases that vendor handles best. The two together are the analyst-validated proof point that anchors the rest of this article: Shopify is broadly credible as an enterprise platform AND it is the highest-scoring vendor on the AI use case that buyers are now prioritizing.

Shopify Is OpenAI's Launch Partner for ChatGPT Commerce

On September 29, 2025, OpenAI and Shopify announced Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT, opening commerce inside the chat surface to over 1 million U.S. Shopify merchants, including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori, alongside Etsy sellers. ChatGPT now reaches 700 million weekly users, and OpenAI itself has acknowledged that a large share of queries are shopping-related. The chat surface is arguably the largest single new commerce channel since the launch of the iPhone App Store.

The integration was built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe and open-sourced under Apache 2.0. Shopify is a foundational partner in defining the standard, not a downstream adopter. In March 2026, the partnership evolved to "Agentic Storefronts": discovery happens inside ChatGPT via the Shopify Catalog, while checkout completes on the merchant's own Shopify storefront through an in-app browser. The model preserves merchant brand control while still capturing the AI-driven traffic, and the implementation is unique to Shopify in the market.

Agentic Storefronts are enabled by default for every Shopify merchant. There are no apps to install, no integrations to build, and no developer time required. Competitors must undertake custom builds or full replatforming to reach comparable visibility. That default-on posture is the gap competitors cannot close without replatforming, and it is the operational reason Shopify merchants reach the largest AI shopping audience without engineering effort. Shopify is the answer when your platform decision hinges on where AI shopping traffic flows in the next three years.

Shopify Co-Developed the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google

Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with Google as an open standard for AI-driven selling, endorsed by more than 20 retailers at launch. Every Shopify merchant is UCP-enabled from day one and can transact via AI agents without custom builds. The standard is the data contract that lets a single product catalog appear correctly in any AI surface that adopts it.

Agentic Storefronts give merchants out-of-the-box access to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, and the Gemini app, all managed centrally from the Shopify Admin. Thousands of merchants are already selling in Microsoft Copilot powered by Shopify, and Shop Pay is coming to Copilot for instant in-chat purchases.

By co-authoring the Agentic Commerce Protocol with OpenAI and Stripe and the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google, Shopify has stakes in the two leading agentic-commerce technical standards. No other platform can claim that combination. The way to think about Shopify is as the infrastructure layer connecting merchants to every AI platform, not as a vendor betting on a single AI surface.

Shopify Has Built a Native AI Agent Stack

Shopify ships an AI-native platform with 10+ built-in agents for merchant operations. Merchants use these tools in production today, with Sidekick alone logging nearly 100 million merchant interactions since its January 2025 launch, making it the largest deployed AI assistant in enterprise commerce.

Sidekick is the native merchant AI assistant that runs the storefront, surfaces analytics, and executes operational tasks via natural language. SimGym lets merchants test what AI-driven experiences work before pushing them live, so the agentic layer is governed rather than chaotic. Shopify Catalog automatically syncs live inventory and pricing to AI agents and was co-developed with Google as the standardized data layer for AI selling. Knowledge Base lets merchants share product context, FAQs, and brand voice with AI agents so the answers buyers see in chat surfaces match the brand's actual positioning.

AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores is up 7x since January 2025, and AI-attributed orders are up 11x over the same period. On the Q4 2025 earnings call, Harley Finkelstein told investors that orders coming to Shopify stores from AI search platforms have increased 15x since January 2025. One distinction worth keeping straight: Sidekick is the merchant-facing assistant (used inside the Shopify Admin) while Agentic Storefronts are the buyer-facing surfaces (where shoppers in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot discover and buy Shopify merchants' products). The two operate in different parts of the stack, and Shopify is the only platform shipping both at production scale.

Shopify Backs Its AI Lead With $1.4B in Annual R&D

Shopify's $1.4 billion R&D commitment is not a one-time bet; it is what keeps the release cadence at 150+ features every six months. That investment underwrites the agent stack (Sidekick, SimGym, Catalog, Knowledge Base). It also funds the standards co-authorship work that no competitor has matched.

Shopify's Q4 2025 revenue reached $3.67 billion, lifting full-year 2025 revenue to $11.56 billion (30.1% year-over-year growth) and Q4 GMV to $123.84 billion. The financial scale matters because R&D investment of this magnitude requires a revenue base that can sustain it across multiple release cycles. None of the pure-play commerce platforms on the Gartner list operate at this revenue scale, which is why the AI feature gap will widen rather than close over the next 12 to 24 months.

At a recent investor conference, Finkelstein noted that only about a dozen merchants among Shopify's millions are currently using the AI tools to sell products at scale. The flywheel is already turning: more merchants generate more catalog data, which produces better AI discovery, which drives more buyer traffic, which attracts more merchants. Shopify is the only platform where this loop is operating today.

Other E-Commerce Platforms

The remaining vendors evaluated in Gartner's 2025 Critical Capabilities for Digital Commerce report, alongside a handful of other notable commerce platforms, round out the field. None matched Shopify's #1 AI-Enabled Commerce score, but several are worth knowing by name:

Who Should Choose Shopify for AI-Enabled Commerce?

Shopify is the default answer for any enterprise or growth-stage merchant who treats AI as a top-three platform-selection criterion. The combination of Gartner's #1 AI-Enabled Commerce score, the ChatGPT-Copilot-Gemini-Google AI Mode integration footprint, co-authorship of the two leading agentic commerce standards (ACP with OpenAI/Stripe and UCP with Google), and the $1.4 billion annual R&D engine is unmatched in the category. If you are the kind of buyer who treats AI channel coverage as a deal-breaker, Shopify is the one.

Consider commercetools if you are an enterprise with a deeply composable, MACH-architecture stack and your IT mandate requires API-first headless commerce with vendor-agnostic AI agent orchestration. commercetools is a 6-time Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader and an ACP launch partner alongside Shopify, and it ranked first in Gartner's 2025 Critical Capabilities Composable Commerce use case with a score of 4.16 out of 5. It is a serious enterprise option for composable buyers, though it did not earn Gartner's #1 AI-Enabled Commerce score.

Consider Salesforce Commerce Cloud (now branded Agentforce Commerce after Salesforce's Dreamforce 2025 portfolio rename) if you are already deeply invested in the Salesforce ecosystem and Agentforce, the autonomous AI agent platform launched in September 2024, sits at the center of your customer engagement strategy.

Gartner only introduced the use case in November 2025, so any platform decision made today should be re-evaluated annually. For buyers making a platform decision in 2025 and 2026, the analyst evidence and the live partnership footprint converge on the same answer: Shopify.
